A blue-laced rokumai do armor
Edo period (18th century)
The helmet bowl of four heavy iron plates and lacquered black, four-tiered shikoro (neck guard) finished with rounded fukigaeshi also lacquered black and trimmed with copper fukurin, the mabisashi applied with stenciled doeskin and trimmed with gilt fukurin, mounted with maedate formed as a pair of inverted wings of gilt and lacquered wood, the russet-iron menpo (facemask) with moustache, detachable nose, red-lacquered lips and four-tiered leather-covered itazane yodarekake, with a rokumai do (six-piece cuirass) of yahazu-shaped lamellae applied with stenciled doeskin munaita, the kusazuri (skirt) of six tassets each of five rows of itazane, itazane sode (shoulder guards), thirteen-splint shino-gote (sleeves) with seven rows of hinged itazane to the shoulders, the haidate (thigh protectors) of lacquered honkozane, thirteen-splint shino-suneate (leg guards)
Accompanied by a certificate of registration as Koshu tokubetsu kicho shiryo (Especially important armor object) no. 24 issued by the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon Kai (Japanese Armor Preservation Society), 1976.8.1
