A set of horse armor (bagai) with mask (bamen) and iron stirrups
Edo period (18th-19th century)
The mask (chanfron) for a horse armor modeled as a dragon's head built up with lacquered and gilt papier mâché, the overall surface in gold-textured lacquer, lips, nostrils and other details lacquered red, the eyes inset, with long, gold eyelashes and stylized whiskers flanking the snout, cheek pieces hinged with leather
Mask: 21½in. (54.6cm) long;
The horse armor in two sections, one to protect the neck and shoulders (munagai), the other for the croup, flank and thighs (shirigai), each section constructed of small, rectangular pressed-leather pieces lacquered gold and stitched to a fabric backing, a pair of saddle flaps (aori) constructed of small, rectangular pressed-leather pieces lacquered gold with red silk strapping and reins in various sizes and lengths;
The lacquer saddle decorated in gold, silver and black hiramaki-e with a dragon and clouds, the interior with a nashiji ground and two prominent fan-shaped mon, the saddle cushion and saddle pads lacquered gold, the white padded-leather saddle cushion (basen) with leather straps for holding the stirrups;
The iron stirrups with partially obscured inlaid signature Kashu ju Tokuro Yoshinori saku (made by Tokuro Yoshinori of Kaga province), decorated with large inlaid-bronze flowers, the insteps with red lacquer
Saddle: 14¼in. (36.1cm.) long; stirrups: 11in. (27.9cm.) long
