Gandhara, 2nd/3rd century
Wearing a diaphanous sanghati, adorned with multiple necklaces and beaded sandals, the full face with heavy-lidded eyes and the hair pulled into a topknot and flowing over the shoulders, the base with a flaming stupa worshipped by two seated figures and flanked by columns

Lot Essay

The necklace with the flowerhead extending over the shoulder is an unusual feature; for similar examples, see W. Zwalf, A Catalogue of the Gandhara Sculpture in the British Museum, vol. II, 1996, p. 50-51, fig. 76-78.
