Zhou Li, a native of Jiading in Jiangsu province, was a nephew of the landscape painter Zhou Hao (1675-1763), who taught him painting and bamboo carving. During the later years of his life, Zhou Li lived in Yangzhou and enjoyed the support of the prominent salt merchant and art patron Ma Yueguan. This series of paintings was painted when Zhou was probably around 40 years old and still learning to master a variety of artistic styles. Another landscape from the same year is published in Zhongguo Gudai Shuhua Tumu, vol. 10, Beijing, 1983, p. 147, no. 7-1279.
