Weng Tonghe was one of the preeminent Confucian scholars of his day and received the highest degree in the imperial examinations in 1856. He served as tutor to two emperors and held several important official positions, including on the Grand Council. His erudition is revealed in this pair of fans on which he inscribed excerpts from several famous authors.
