A RARE CARVED ZITAN BRUSH POT

The cylindrical sides finely carved with a continuous landscape scene, with forested cliffs jutting dramatically from the rocky shores of a winding river in which a figure steers his boat towards an open pavilion set on a distant shore, and another figure seated in a boat admires a retreat perched above the water in the distance, all below two lengthy poetic inscriptions in clerical script, one followed by the signature, Ruan Yuan ti (inscribed by Ruan Yuan), and a seal reading, Boyuan fu, the other followed by a seal reading tiesheng, the hao of Xigang

Lot Essay

Ruan Yuan, also known as Boyuan, was a well-known scholar/official who passed his jinshi examination in 1789, and was subsequently appointed to the Hanlin Academy. He was famous for his literary work, Biographies of Astronomers and Mathematicians.

Xigang (1746-1803) was a renowned seal carver, calligrapher and painter of the Qing dynasty, particularly well known for his landscapes.
