Lot Essay

Compare the similar gilt-bronze bodhisattva illustrated in Ancient Chinese Arts in the Idemitsu Collection, Japan, 1989, fig. 347; a very similar pair included in the exhibition, Buddhist Images in Gilt Metal, Taipei, 1993, no. 70; and another from the Frederick M. Mayer Collection, sold in our London rooms, 25 June 1974, lot. 136. See, also, the very similar pair sold in these rooms, 20 March 1997, lot 188.
