Colonel Hope Graham of the 59th Foot landed outside Canton in 1857 during the China War(1856-60), commanding the second brigade which comprised a mixed force of British and Indian troops. Graham was one of the first officers to scale the walls of the East or Linn Fort in the attack on Chinese defences.
