Lot Essay

These chairs are evocative of the style created by the notable 'lady' decorator, Syrie Maugham (d.1955), in the late 1920s and 1930s. She worked in London and New York, and decorated her own King's Road home in 1929 in a light and airy manner, furnished with comfortable sofas and French fashioned chairs that were upholstered in whites and creams (illustrated A. and A. Gore, The History of English Interiors, Oxford, 1991, p.175).
