Rae left Australia in 1887 and settled in France, making her home at Étaples, the artists' colony in Brittany. During the Great War she was employed at the YMCA camp in Étaples, working in the Voluntary Aid Detachment where she made numerous drawings and pastels of military subjects through the war years.
