Gunnar Nilsson
Winner of one Grand Prix. Team Lotus driver in 1976 and 1977. Partner to Mario Andretti. Signed after an oustanding set of results in Formula Three and Formula Atlantic, Nilsson easily settled into Formula One. In only 31 races he scored one victory (Belgian GP - Zolder 1977), three 3rd places, one 4th place, and three 5th places - happy to be Mario Andretti's partner, from whom he learnt a great deal, he perfected his skills at the highest level. Towards the end of the 1977 season the quality of his driving was in decline, as unknown to anyone, he was in the grip of cancer. Signing for Arrows for the 1978 season, he unfortunately was too ill to drive for them, dying in October 1978. Such was his bravery that until the very end he refused to take pain-killing drugs that would have helped him whilst founding the Charity set up in his name to fight the disease.
This Bell helmet is the actual one used by Nilsson in 1977 including his only win. In addition to the Swedish flag design to centre, it has his stylised signature on each side and overlaid stickers of his personal sponsor Top-Print, whilst on each side are the gold Goodyear 'winged foot' decals commemorating his win at Zolder. He only used two helmets in his short but outstanding Formula One career, the other is in the possesion.
