Jody Scheckter
World Champion driver 1979.
Winner of 10 Grands Prix. After spells at McLaren (1972 & 1973) and Tyrell from 1974 until 1976 the latter bringing him his first four Grand Prix Victories. Jody Scheckter signed for Walter Wolf Racing Team for 1977. Surprisingly winning his first Grand Prix for them in Argentina and going on to win the prestigious Monaco race, followed by a famous home win in Canada; a season which gave him second place in the World Championship, at the wheel of the single entry of the last true private-entrant in Formula One. A Wolf private-test session at Fiorano persuaded Enzo Ferrari to sign Jody for the 1979 season, when he became World Champion.
This helmet given to the owner in 1978, shows sign of having been repainted and re-stickered to keep it going as long as possible. It was used during both 1977 ansd 1978 and previously during 1976 in the six wheeled Tyrrell; and the outline of the sponsor-logo appears under the Goodyear display overlay. After Lauda's accident, drivers were very conscious of the fire-risk and this Bell helmet has the velcro strip around the base to allow the attachment of a Nomex bib to protect the driver's neck . Scheckter's personal foam sealing is also still intact around the vizor aperture.
