1975 MASERATI MERAK
Chassis No. AM122 0904
Ivory with beige leather interior.
Engine: 90° V6 double overhead camshaft, 2,965cc, 190bhp at 7500rpm. Gearbox: five speed manual; Suspension: wishbones and coil springs front and rear; Brakes: disc front and rear. Left hand drive.
The Maserati Merak, announced at the Paris Salon of 1972, was a little brother to the mid-engined V8 Bora and used the same Ital Design steel body as the Bora but a smaller V6 90 degree 3 litre engine - as found in the Citroen SM coupe - that liberated space for two small child-sized rear seats. The all-alloy power unit, with triple Weber carburettors, was already built by Maserati for Citroen at the Modena factory as Citroen had a controlling interest in Maserati during the early '70s and thus the five speed transaxle used in the front drive SM could also be found in the Merak. The outright performance of the Merak was quick by most standards with a top speed of 135mph and 0-60 in 8.2 seconds. Fuel consumption worked out at a reasonable 19mpg. All Meraks had excellent handling, the mid-engined configuration conferring fine balance and traction on the car. There was a small amount of soft luggage space in the nose of the car.
Finished in Ivory with beige leather trim this completely restored Merak is certainly one of the best that Christie's have had the pleasure of offering for sale. Indeed, the condition is difficult to fault and the car appears to be in outstanding order throughout. It comes with Swiss registration documents.
A rare opportunity to acquire a desirable but usable Italian supercar of the '70s that is in "showroom" condition.
