Lot Essay

Frühbeck was in the substantial retinue of artists and scientists taken by the Austrian Archduchess Leopoldina to Rio in 1817. Leopoldina was bound for Rio to marry Don Pedro, heir to the throne of Portugal and future emperor of Brazil. A portfolio of Frübeck's Brazilian tempera sketches is in the collection of the Hispanic Society of America (G. Ferrez, Iconografia do Rio de Janeiro 1530-1890, Sao Paolo, 2000, I, pp.173-5, nos 0870-0885).
