1956 JAGUAR XK140 FIXED HEAD COUPE
Chassis No. 815769BW
Metallic grey with tan leather interior.
Engine: six cylinder in-line, double overhead camshaft, 3,442cc, twin SU carburettors, 190bhp; Gearbox: automatic; Brakes: four wheel drum; Suspension: wishbones and torsion bars front, live axle with leaf springs rear. Left hand drive.
Continuing the successful XK sportscar line (launched in 1947 with the show-stopping XK120) Jaguar announced the XK140 in 1955. The principal improvement was to the steering gear, now a rack and pinion system developed on the C-Type Le Mans winner in place of the less precise steering box used on the 120. Outwardly, the 140 could be singled out by its new cast grille plus a small medallion on the boot lid proclaiming the marque's recent Le Mans success. The elegant coupe version also had a more spacious cabin with space for children or luggage behind the front seats.
With the same stout, separate chassis, torsion bar front suspension and drum brakes as before, the XK140 was astonishing value for money; it was well under half the price of the rival Mercedes 300SL yet could almost match its performance, with a top speed of near 130mph.
The XK140 proved even more successful than the XK120, much of the production run earning valuable dollars for Britain as the marque's fame and reputation spread.
Healthy sales in the USA prompted Jaguar to offer an automatic gearbox option. The combination of the torquey XK engine and the automatic gearbox, as fitted on this example, produced a car that lost very little of its excitement yet was totally docile.
Finished in light metallic grey, this left hand drive XK140 Fixed Head Coupe has been totally restored. We are told that a figure in the region of SFR140,000 was expended on the restoration and the car is in outstanding condition throughout.
The car is sold with Swiss registration documents.
