BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1910-13

Sledging Tables. [N.p.] 1910. Small 4° (170 x 123mm). Contents leaf, 130pp. of printed tables, 8pp. of manuscript solutions to navigational problems, 18 printed tables and 8 photographs of tables pasted onto blanks at end, 2 printed folded tables, photograph of tables, and small piece of paper with pencil annotation in pocket at rear. (Light creasing and soiling throughout.) Contemporary blue cloth, titled in gilt to upper cover (binding showing signs of use in the field, extremities rubbed, the whole loose, rear hinge broken, light soiling). Provenance: Charles Seymour 'Silas' Wright (signature appears three times in ink and pencil to front endpapers, extensive manuscript annotation in his hand to endpapers and blanks).

EXTREMELY RARE SURVIVAL OF THE TABLES USED TO CALCULATE NAVIGATIONAL POSITIONS AND DISTANCES COVERED DURING THE ILL-FATED TERRA NOVA EXPEDITION. The book appears to be standard logarithmic and trigonometric tables reset for expedition use, complete with a nonce contents leaf, and accompanied by tables for 'Points of a Compass', Sun's Parallax in Alt.', etc. The present work's EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE, BEING 'SILAS' WRIGHT'S OWN COPY, USED IN ANTARCTICA with dated sightings in his hand (e.g. 'Feb 17 Camp 15'), is unparalled at auction, with NO OTHER SIMILAR ITEMS RECORDED IN ABPC-ONLINE.
