Lot Essay

A similar comb with silver filigree mounting is decribed and illustrated in Exhibition catalogue, Exotica- The Portuguese Discoveries and the Renaissance Kunstkammer, Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon, 17 October 2001-6 January 2002, pp. 140-141, where the author states that 16th Century Indian tortoiseshell combs were very rare in 17th Century Europe.
