Gerrit Schimmel took over the workshop of Henrick ter Horst in 1680.

A mortar signed Henrick ter Horst with almost identical frieze decoration is illustrated in Wittop Koning I, p. 45 (WK II, p. 56).

Unfortunately less is known about Gilles Wibrans in Amsterdam, Wittop Koning describes him as being a retailer for Gerrit Schimmel. In contrast with other mortars and bells which are mostly anonymous (only with inscriptions like Lof godt van al or Soli Deo Gloria), there are a few objects with the name of the retailer. Wittop Koning mentions some examples with similar inscription Gilles Wibrans (WK II, p. 58-59, nr. 5 and ill. 62 and p. 119).
A bell ordered by Wibrans is illustrated in O. ter Kuile, Koper & Brons, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam 1986, p. 234, ill. 323A.
