With circular ivory case with threaded lid, paper compass scale to the inside engraved with central windrose and wind directions, blued steel needle, the silver sundial centred by a stylized arabesque, the outer ring with Roman numerals and sword-hilt half hour markers, signed Gerardus Brand fecit Amftelodami foliate engraved hinged gnomon
8.5 cm. diam (overall); the silver dial 7.7 cm. diam.

Gerardus Brand(t) (1594-1659)
Brandt was born in Middelburg in 1594. He settled in Amsterdam, with his workshop situated on the Rokin across the 'Beurs'. Brandt was active as clockmaker and is also recorded for making sundials.
