A GEORGE II OAK COFFOR BACH
This lot will be removed to an off-site warehouse … Read more Welshness Welsh furniture tends to be very distinctive. The coffor bach (or 'small chest') is uniquely Welsh (Lot 270). Such chests are thought to have been given as gifts for special events. The chest with fielded panels and drawers below (Lot 271) is another distictly Welsh form often referred to as a Carmarthen chest because of it's origin in West Wales. Lot 273 is a variation of this model. The chest in Lot 272 belongs to a small group of early chests recorded in the Brecon and Radnor regions. Note the construction whereby the legs are hollowed out to receive the front, back and side planks. Welsh dressers are represented here by this good North Wales model (Lot 274), which has an additional row of small drawers below the rack, and the very strong design of the potboard dresser base from Montgomeryshire (Lot 275) with it's bold ogee-arched friezes.
