FIRST EDITION. Henrik Bull undertook this expedition in search of Right Whales. He was financially supported by Svend Foyn, a Norwegian whaling captain who pioneered revoluntionary methods for whaling, such as the modern harpoon gun. Over the course of the two year expedition, they visited Tristan da Cunha, the Prince Edward Islands, Îles Crozet, Îles Kerguelen, the Balleny Islands, Campbell Island and Possession Island. The landing at Cape Adare was the first confirmed landing on the Antarctic continental mainland.
J.C. Bull helped H.J. Bull with the completion of the book. The author thanks him in the preface: "I should have never ventured to offer the narrative of my Antarctic voyage in 1894-1895 ... if I had not recieved the valuable assistance of my cousin, Mr. J.C. Bull ... in whose family circle most of this book has taken shape".
