With carved & pierced decoration, the solid top with pinned-on silver bands engraved with flowers and foliate scrolls centred by a presentation silver plaque inscribed "Presented to Sir John Pope Hennessy KCMG, Governor of Mauritius, by the inhabitants of Sierra Leone, West Africa, on 22nd August 1888, the sixteenth anniversary of the abolition of the House & Land Tax, in commemoration of his beneficent action in relieving the poor from this oppressive tax during his administration of the Government of the West Africa Settlements in 1872.
