Lot Essay

Elizabeth Frances Amherst Hale was the sister of William Pitt Amherst, 1st Earl of Amherst, the British diplomat and colonial administrator. Elizabeth married Captain John Hale in 1799, and they sailed for Quebec in June of that year where her husband took up the post as Deputy Paymaster General of the British troops stationed in the Canadas.
