Further details
This plate depicts the 16th century Renaissance villa and its celebrated, romantic garden, which contained the ruins of other important ancient villas, such as the Villa Adriana, as well as the various caverns and waterfalls integral to the composition. This relationship between stone and water was of utmost importance to Cardinal Ipolitto II d'Este, who conceived the villa and its gardens and who commissioned Alberto Galvani to complete the project. The villa later fell into disrepair until its rescue in the mid-19th century by Gustav Hohenlohe. Now owned by the Italian state, villa and gardens are open to the public, although extensive restoration work continues.
