The majority of the service to which these plates originally belonged is now in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. For further information on its manufacture and history, please visit www.christies.com.

The present set of ten plates and a further eight sold Christie's, New York, 18 October 2002, lot 429 and now in a private American collection were likely all originally part of an extensive dessert service acquired from the factory by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 21 pluviôse an V (9 February 1797) as a gift to be presented to Antonio Pignatelli, Prince of Belmont, the majority of which is to be found today in the collection of Her Majesty the Queen.

The gift was given in recognition of his having negociated the peace treaty between France and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies for whose King he served as Gentleman of the Bedchamber, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. For a detailed history of the service and its decoration, a wash drawing for which is retained in the factory's archives, see Geoffrey de Bellaigue, French Porcelain in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, 2009, vol. II, cat. no. 178.
