Boulu, a pupil of the great Lépine, is recorded in rue du Roule in 1812. He is said to have travelled to Sweden with Marshal Jean Bernadotte (subsequently Charles XIV John, King of Sweden and Norway) as his clockmaker. He is recorded by Baillie as clockmaker to the 'duchesse du Suède'. Britten also records him as 'horloger de l'impératrice'.
