Lot Essay

The Chérémèteff family were at the height of their power and influence during the reign of Catherine the Great. Members held high office in the army, navy, and diplomatic corps. It is likely that the dessert service to which the present plate belongs was a gift of the French government.

Denis Levé, recorded at Vincennes and Sèvres as a painter of flowers, patterns and birds, 1754-93 and 1795-1805.
