POMEROL
Though the smallest of the Bordeaux regions, weighing in just under 800 hectares, the reputation looms large as Pomerol is home to some of the world's, not just the region's, most famous and collected wines: Pétrus, Lafleur, Le Pin. The vineyards are west of St. Émilion and nestled between the Barbanne and Taillas rivers. Despite its modest size, Pomerol possesses the fascinating terroirs that vary greatly from vineyard to vineyard. In the west, sandy soils give way as you move east, toward the famous plateau of gravel with clay. Underneath, an iron rich crasse de fer and here, Merlot is king.
