Lot Essay

The present work, lots 23 and 24 are the original designs for Benjamin Britten's opera The Rape of Lucretia staged at Glyndebourne in 1946. They were used as illustrations for The Rape of Lucretia - A Symposium published by Bodley Head in 1948 to commemorate the 1946 production (see R.F.H Duncan (ed.), The Rape of Lucretia - A Symposium, London, 1948).
