With three-stage swamped sighted barrel engraved with a spray of foliage at the breech, engraved iron tang, border engraved rounded lock signed 'W. STAPLES' and engraved with a spray of foliage on the tail, walnut full stock with raised apron carved with a shell around the barrel-tang, engraved brass mounts including pierced rococo side-plate, shaped brass rococo escutcheon, and later wooden ramrod, London proof mark and incomplete maker's mark

William Staples was a Birmingham gunmaker recorded in Bull Street between 1766 and 1770 who is known to have had his guns proved in London
