Lot Essay

The 'Ganesh-type' headdress was adopted by Alexander to show his victory in the Indus Valley, and can be seen on many coins of the period. Being an essential attribute of Alexander it was adopted by subsequent Ptolemaic rulers. For a discussion on the type cf. F. Antonovich, Les Métamorphoses Divines d'Alexandre, Paris, 1996, pp. 166-169.
