The following eleven lots come from a private collection, and demonstrate the diversity and skill of the textile industry in Iran between the 17th and 19th centuries. Both as luxuries, produced to delight the local court and as commodities sought by mercantile traders, textiles were an important part of Safavid society. Travel journals describe Kashan, Yazd, Isfahan and Tabriz at the centres of the silk industry. Such was the intense production that Sir Thomas Herbert, in his Travels in Persia, 1627-1629, remarked that "here are full manufactures of silks, satins and cloth of gold curiously wrought and coloured, no better in the world" (quoted in Carol Bier (ed.), Woven from the Soul, Spun from the Heart. Textile Arts of Safavid and Qajar Iran 16th-19th Centuries, Washington D.C., 1987, p. 21).
