Devotional poetry in praise of the Prophet, Arabic manuscript on cream paper, 43ff. plus 1 fly-leaf, most folios with 3ll. of elegant black thuluth alternated with two pairs of lines of black naskh, each side also with a diagonal line of red tawqi', the first 2ff. with 10ll. of black naskh in clouds and a title in gold thuluth, the third folio with one line of gold thuluth in a black cloud filled with red dots, the colophon in black tawqi' giving the scribes name and the date on the diagonal, some later owner's marks and stamps, in brown card binding

Lot Essay

The original title of this reknown work is Al-Kawakib al-Durriya fi Madh Khayr al-Bariya but is better known as Qasida al-Burda (Poem of the Mantle). The poem and its author, Al-Busiri, are traditionally revered by sufis.

Numerous commentaries of this poem have been written of which two, dated 1357 and 1433 AD are in the Chester Beatty Library (respectively no.3501 and no.4236). Another is included in this sale, lot 308.
