Lot Essay

This miniature, and that of the following lot come from the same Markandeya Purana series as two miniatures in the Victoria and Albert Museum (W.G.Archer, Indian Painting from the Punjab Hills, London, 1973, p.164, nos.61(i-ii), pl.117). Another painting from the same series is published in L.Leach, Indian Miniature Paintings and Drawings. The Cleveland Museum of Art, 1986, cat. 116. Two other miniatures from the series were recently sold in these Rooms, 13 April 2010, lots 293 and 292.
