This candlestick, made in the last year of the Ottoman empire, has a verse in Ottoman Turkish around the neck as well as the date and an inscription stating that it was a waqf of Kamal al-Din. Around the body are verses in Turkish verses on the themes of fire and lamps.
It is possible that the Kamal al-Din of the waqf inscription is the Ottoman architect Kemalettin Bey, celebrated for pioneering the Turkish neoclassical style in buildings such as the Kemaletting Mosque in Bebek and the portal of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
