Lot Essay

In Jessica Hallett's article noted under the previous lot she illustrates a carpet woven from the same cartoon as this, with a very similar border, which was for centuries in the Capella di Santa Luiza, Lisbon (Jessica Hallett, 'From the Looms of Yazd and Isfahan', in Carpets and Textiles in the Iranian World, Oxford and Genoa, 2010, fig.10, p.109). The two demonstrate clearly her point that with a design like this you do not need to make another cartoon just because the size changes. It works equally well on the Lisbon carpet which is more than 10m long as it does on the present more modestly proportioned carpet. She attributes this group simply to the seventeenth century.
