Lot Essay

There is a crowned 'W' in one corner.

The colouring of this rug and the entrelac border are indicative of European manufacture of the 1920s. The motifs are particularly indicative of Norway, but there is no known Norwegian carpet manufacturer. Spain has also been suggested as a possibility, but the weave is atypical for most Spanish carpets. The size of this carpet and the consistent quality of weave indicates a commercial concern that would have woven a considerable number of carpets, so Norway is improbable. It was probably produced by one of the many impressive commercial weavers who thrived in the late 19th and early 20th century but of whom there are very few indeed left today.
