Lot Essay

The weaver Hajji Mullah Muhammad Hassan Mohtasham is discussed in the entry for a large carpet woven with the characteristics associated with him, lot 11. The present rug actually has much more in common with his known signed works than the larger carpet. It combines a design of high stylisation with beautiful proportions, woven with a very high degree of precision and accuracy. Like a considerable amount of later Qajar art it also very much retains its sense of humour; the natural world is full of charm in which the onlooker should take great pleasure.
