Lot Essay

The signature cartouche reads, amal-e (the work of) Makhmalbaf.
Mahmalbaf is a well-known workshop name from Meshed, probably slightly earlier and certainly not as well known as Amoghli or Saber. All three of these famous weavers used wool that was dryer and much more durable than the traditional Meshed wool that had been used for centuries. The colours used here, with their overall very rich dark tonality, are typical of Meshed carpets of the Pahlavi period.
