Lot Essay

This carpet is an outstanding example of a type of Kashan known as a "Manchester" Kashan carpet. Like the second generation Mohtashams, they are piled far thicker than the Kashan carpets of only a few years earlier, using a very fine soft wool. They were woven very finely, using expensive materials, and much sought-after in the 1920s and 1930s. It was these carpets that the "American" Sarouk carpets were trying to provide cheap coarser alternatives for. It is remarkable to find an example of this size in this good condition.
