A FINE GEORGE IV SILVER-GILT TANKARD
MARK OF PHILIP RUNDELL, LONDON, 1820
Cylindrical, the foot chased with a band of rosettes, the lower body with scrolling foliage frieze incorporating leopards and putti, the upper body cast and chased with a scene of the Triumph of Bacchus including Bacchus reclining on a chariot drawn by two horses and Persephone on a second chariot drawn by leopards on a matted ground, the hinged cover with a palmette thumbpiece and a finial cast as a crest, with a leaf-capped scroll handle, marked near handle, inside cover, finial and nut, the foot engraved 'RUNDELL BRIDGE ET RUNDELL AURIFICES REGIS LONDINI'

Lot Essay

A tankard depicting the same Triumph of Bacchus scene, also by Rundell, 1820 and formerly in the collection of Sir R.V. Sutton, sold Christie's, New York, 22 October 1984, lot 173. Another tankard with this scene, by John Bridge, dating to 1827 is illustrated in Michael Clayton, The Collector's Dictionary of the Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America, 1971, no. 609.

Rundell also produced tankards that depicted the Judgement of Paris. Examples from 1821 and 1820 sold from the Hartman Collection, Christie's, New York, 20 October 1999, lot 208 and Sotheby's, New York, 16-17 December 1982, lot 540.
