AN UNUSUAL BRAZILIAN GOLD-MOUNTED CARVED COCONUT GOBLET
UNMARKED, PROBABLY LAST QUARTER OF 18TH CENTURY
Carved with foliate scrolls and set with piqué-work beading, stiff leafage on foot and the sides with two oval panels, one reading Lembrança de Diamantina, the other carved with a bird in flight above a scroll with legend Gratidao, the upper gold rim with later English inscription

Lot Essay

Diamantina is in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The city dates from the Portugese colonial period and was built in the early 18th century as Arraial do Tijuco, changing it's name when diamonds were discovered and mined there.
