This large basket is similar in form to one by the same, 1798-1809, purchased by Elizabeth Patterson, first wife of Jérôme Bonaparte, younger brother of Emperor Napoléon I, and King of Westphalia (see Sotheby's, New York, April 12, 1988, lot 28). The Patterson basket had less elaborate handles and weighted rather less. It was described in the Odiot accounts as "une jatte ovale anses serpent... corbeille à pain" and was sold to Mrs Patterson on May 20, 1817 for 260 FF.
