Lot Essay

The self-taught artist Khalil Zgaib is considered one of the pioneers of modern Lebanese art. His paintings mainly depict crowd scenes, picked out in minute detail and recalling the work of Oriental
miniaturists. The subject of these paintings is most often the festivals held in the Christian villages in Lebanon. Works by him are exceedingly rare and the present lot is a particularly large and magnificent example.
