FRIEDRICH, Andreas (?1560-1617). Jetziger Welt Lauff. Darmstadt: Balthasar Hofmann for Conrad Corthoys in Frankfurt, 1611.
Small oblong 4° (152 x 190mm). Title within hand-coloured woodcut border, 37 full-page woodcut illustrations, all IN CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING, explanatory text on opposite page within ornamental woodcut border. (Upper inner corner of title torn away without loss, lightly browned throughout, stronger in text leaves at beginning and end, a few very short marginal tears.) Contemporary boards (lightly rubbed and corners a little bumped, lightly soiled, spine quite rubbed, paper chipped at head of spine). Provenance: 'H.C.G.Y.S.' (old inscription on front endpaper).
PROBABLY FIRST EDITION OF AN EXTREMELY RARE EMBLEM BOOK. No copy is found in any major library (not in VD-17, WorldCat, etc.) or listed in any subject bibliography; no other copy is known at auction.
The attractive illustrations depict scenes from the Bible and of people being led astray. Each illustration is accompanied by an explanatory verse encouraging people to live according to the Lord's Gospel and warning them to resist evil influences. A similar emblem book by Andreas Friedrich was published in 1617, Emblemata nova; das ist New Bilderbuch. Another work with a similar title Jetziger Welt-Lauff, worinnen kürtzlich die unartige Sitten ... der Menschen angezeigt, by Zacharias von Beichlingen, was published in 1664. Friedrich was a painter and engraver and around one hundred engravings can be attributed to him (Benezit). Not in VD-17, BL German 1601-1700, Brunet, Landwehr, or Praz.
