Lot Essay

Through the influence of the fourth Earl of Bute, James Dallaway was appointed physician and chaplain to Robert Liston's embassy to the Ottoman empire. He travelled overland to Constantinople in 1794, returning home in the October of the following year via the Greek Islands and Italy. Published in 1805, his itinerary was widely regarded at the time as the most detailed study of the Balkans.
