Valladolid, circa 1600, assaymaster Alonso Guttierez, maker's mark probably M. Miguel
On raised base, the body flat-chased with stylised scrolling foliage on matted ground, and between the moulded ribs with rabbits and animals within foliage, with straight everted spout cast with a bearded grotesque mask, the angular and scroll handle similarly chased, marked on base

Lot Essay

A. Fernandez, R. Munoa and J. Rabasco, in Enciclopedia de la Plata Espanola, Madrid, 1984, p. 231, nos 1-372 and 373 record a Pedro Miguel working at Valladolid at this date with a similar mark. Presumably M. Miguel was from the same family. A similarly chased ewer is illustrated by A. Fernandez, R. Munoa and J. Rabasco, op. cit, p. 472.
