The present lot depicts a scene in the story of Tobit taken from the Book of Tobit in the Apocrypha. A pious Jew, Tobit provided proper burials for fallen Israelites slain by the Assyrian King Sennacherib according to the precepts of Hebrew law. For his defiance of the King's orders all his property was seized and Tobit was exiled.
