Lear left England in December 1853 on the steam-boat The Indus, travelling via Cairo to Girga. Although he came to believe that Egypt lacked the variety and interest of Greece, he wrote of the country's beauty and 'the unconsciously exquisite colour of sky and earth', something that can be seen in this picture.
