The cover delicately carved with an idyllic garden scene depicting two scholars in a pavilion and a further scholar and his attendant crossing a bridge, all surrounded by rockwork and beneath a large gnarled pine tree, the sloping sides each with a cartouche enclosing peony and other floral sprays, the box with the sides carved with similar cartouches and supported on a short foot with key-fret design, the interior and the base covered in black lacquer
